Mata Amritanandamayi
(1953-present, India)

Biography Excerpt:

Mata Amritanandamayi, or Ammachi, as she is known by her devotees, arose from extremely humble beginnings in a tiny  village sandwiched between the backwaters of Kerala and the Indian Ocean, near the southern tip of India. Her resemblance to the Lord Krishna from birth, due to the blueness of her skin was, to some, an indication of her great affinity to him later in her life. Disparaged and mistreated by her parents, Ammachi was put in the role of the family servant. Even at a young age, she was unable to contain her bliss and her adoration of Krishna. Her embodiment of the playful Krishna amazed the local villagers. Her fame spread rapidly to the nearby communities, and soon devotees were coming by the hundreds for her blessings.

Enlightenment Story Excerpt:

Sudhamani's (Mata Amritanandamayi’s) anguish reached a pinnacle. Her prayers had been said. In her own words, "Each and every pore of my body was wide-open with yearning, each atom of my body was vibrating with the sacred mantra, my entire being was rush-ing towards the Divine Mother in a torrential stream... "
In unspeakable agony she cried out, "O Mother...here is Your child about to die drown-ing in unfathomable distress...this heart is break-ing... these limbs are faltering… I am convulsing like a flsh thrown on shore…O Mother.  You have no kindness towards me...I have nothing left to offer You except the last breath of my life..."
Her voice became choked. Her breathing com-pletely stopped. Sudhamani fell unconscious.
